Frequently Asked Questions Below is a list of some of the common questions we get. Q) Do I have to be Aboriginal to apply to programs, education, training or use services? A) In almost all cases, Yes (we are an Aboriginal Agency working for Aboriginal people) Q) How long will it take me to complete my upgrading or get my grade 12? A) This depends on a lot of factors including your commitment, how much "catching up" you need to do, and how much upgrading you want to complete. Usually, the Grade 12 Mature Diploma program takes about a year. Upgrading and Literacy may take longer. Some students will stay with us for just over 2 years while others only stay for a couple of months depending on the individual goals. Q) Can I drop in to type up a resume or get on the internet to search for a job (research, check email)? A) Yes, we provide computer access for our clients. Q) Is there any charge for your services? A) None, we provide numerous programs and services free of charge to our clients. Q) Where do I apply for funding? A) There are many funding sources available. Make an appointment with your employment counsellor to discuss your options. Most funding authorities have long waiting lists as the demand for funding is great. Many individuals will apply for grants and student loans if unable to secure funding. Q) How do I apply for a Social Insurance Number? A) Application forms for social insurance numbers are available at your local Employment Centre or at the Aboriginal Single Window Office located at 181 Higgins. Q) What type of identification do I need to bring when applying for a Social Insurance Number? A) A birth certificate is required. Q) Is there a charge for a Social Insurance Number? A) No. There will be a charge on replacement of social insurance cards. Q) What if I don't have a birth certificate? A) You will have to contact Vital Statistics and fill out a birth certificate form. There is a fee associated with applying for a birth certificate of approximately $30.00. Q) Where do I get a status card? A) The Department of Indian Affairs issues status cards. Contact Indian Affairs for specific details. Q) I know that my Grandmother was in treaty how do I get treaty? A) Contact Indian Affairs and ask to complete a Bill C-31 form. Q) What type of training programs do you have?
